💭 Today’s Thought
“Vulnerability is not weakness; it’s our greatest measure of courage.”
If we can’t handle uncertainty, risk, and emotional exposure in a way that aligns with our values and furthers our organizational goals, we can’t lead.
In a world where perfectionism, pleasing, and proving are used as armor to protect our egos and our feelings, it takes a lot of courage to show up and be all in when we can’t control the outcome. It also takes discipline and self-awareness to understand what to share and with whom. Vulnerability is not oversharing, it’s sharing with people who have earned the right to hear our stories and experiences.
Vulnerability is not weakness; it’s our greatest measure of courage.
- Brené Brown
Ironically, vulnerability is something that we seek in others and yet, so often we resist expressing it ourselves.
The challenge of leadership isn’t to rid yourself of uncertainty, fear, and risk, or to act as though they don’t exist. This is all part of the human experience.
Instead, the challenge we’re called to as leaders is this:
Can you be with all of those things in a way that inspires you and others to connect and create, instead of disconnect and react?
This is the real gift of vulnerability — if we embrace it, we can turn our most trying moments into moments of deep connection and creativity.
🖊️ Today’s reflection
If you’re new to journaling, I highly encourage you to read Nancy Adler’s article: Want to be an outstanding leader? Keep a journal.
This week, find a quiet place and gift yourself 10 minutes to reflect on any of these prompts (or invent your own!):
What does it mean to be vulnerable, in my leadership and life overall?
When in my life and leadership have I been vulnerable? What did I learn from those experiences?
In what area(s) of my life might more vulnerability be required? What small action(s) can I take to make that real?
